Noalarmclocks's travel blog entry:
"Perfume Pagoda
This is an important Buddhist shrine where Vietnamese pilgrims come to worship. It is in a large Karst cave about 60 km from Hanoi. How do you get to the Perfume Pagoda? First, drive for 2.5 hours to the boat area. Next, ride in a flat-bottom, metal boat while squatting on a narrow, wooden bench for 1 hour. Third, hike up to the gondola terminal and take a 10 min. ride 4 km up the mountain. Then, walk .5 km past the vendors. Last, climb down many slippery steps to the cave entrance where you see the Buddhist shrine inside the incense-filled cave. The most enjoyable part of the trip was the wonderful boat ride along the quiet river.
Halong Bay
After a long, three-hour van ride, we gingerly climbed down a narrow, steep gangplank onto our 16- passenger Junk for an overnight tour of beautiful Halong Bay. We sailed through the unusual Karst formations scattered in the water and docked at the base of the Karst mountain containing the Surprise cave. The stalactites and stalagmites were broken and unimpressive, but the cave was huge. We can't tell you what the surprise was because it's censored! We motored to the oyster beds and enjoyed a refreshing swim in the warm bay. Before supper, Judy and Gail bought pearls and Vietnamese wine to toast Judy's retirement. The next morning, we docked at Tito Beach where Matt and Judy hiked to the top of Tito Peak for a view, while David and Gail kayaked around the island. We then sailed through Karsts back to the harbour to disembark."
