Samandbryony's travel blog entry: "After being in two big cities, we were really looking forward to getting back into a smaller, natural place. We were picked up by our tour guide and drove out to Halong City, where we checked into our little boat which would be our home for the day and night. There were about 14 people on our cruise, and we were really lucky we got such a great crew. After it being just the two of us for the past week and a half, it was really fun to swap stories with some new people! Halong Bay is made up of thousands of limestone formations, which are so green and lush. We cruised through for a few hours taking in the beautiful scenery, our ever helpful tour guide Tony pointing out different formations to us. We docked and went exploring around the inside cave of one of the formations, which was incredible to see. After that we went kayaking around the area and took everything in. Sam and I shared a kayak and just couldn't get into a rhythm together, I'm surprised we didn't fall out! It was so relaxing though. We spent the afternoon swimming, some of the guys were brave enough to jump off the top of the boat. The ladies used the ladder to lower themselves in. We had dinner on the boat and then drank bia hanoi under the stars, before having a rubbish night sleep thanks to rats in the walls scratching all night! Everywhere we have stayed around here we have been woken up by roosters, dogs and now rats. The following day most of our fellow crew stayed on the boat as they were only doing one night, while 5 of us went on to Cat Ba island - the biggest island in Halong bay. We mountain biked around the island in the sun, and when we got tired we stopped off at a tiny little roadside stall, sat in child sized plastic seats and had some bia hoi - the cheapest beer in the world The children on the island were so so so soooooo gorgeous. They were so friendly and giggly they were just adorable. Cycling back was like being a celebrity, all the locals we passed would wave and say hello, we biked for ages just calling out "Xian Chao" to everyone we saw. We went to Cat Ba beach 3 for the afternoon, and just chilled before dinner at the hotel and heading out to one of the local bars for a few more bia hanoi's We got back this afternoon, and both feel so in love with this country. It was the best couple of days so far. Tonight we take the overnight sleeper train to Sapa, so we best go and have some dinner....."
